Decaying Market Hall Amidst Nettles and Columns

by Genevieve Gutierrez

Copper-toned light washes over the skeletal remains of a covered market hall where stalls have collapsed inward into a chaotic pile of timber and stone. Thick mist rests on the ground, obscuring the lower portions of toppled columns that rise like broken teeth from the earth. Dry nettles and brittle grasses push through the cracks in the floor, reclaiming the space. The horizon line glows faintly through the haze, wrapping the ruin in a soft, dying radiance. Dust hangs suspended in the air, settling on jagged edges of the ceiling beams. A long shadow stretches across the foreground, ending abruptly at the base of a shattered archway.
