Dawn Mist in Abandoned Andean Cannery Ruins in among roofless stone chambers in the Andes

Dawn Mist in Abandoned Andean Cannery Ruins

by Gregory Whitehead

Grey stone walls rise without roofs, exposing the interior to a thick, wet fog that rests on the damp earth floor. Heavy steel conveyor belts, rusted orange and grey, snake through the chambers, their metal slats sinking into mud where rain has pooled. Moss rests on the lower stones, softening the hard edges of the masonry. The sky above is a pale, uniform white, filtering light that turns the dust motes into a low-hanging haze. Vines drape from the broken masonry, their green leaves glistening with moisture against the grey rock. A jagged opening in the far wall frames the misty expanse beyond, revealing the silhouette of a distant ridge. at the edge is a single rusted bolt on a conveyor bracket, dark against the pale fog.
