Ruins Reclaimed by Cactus After Rain

by Brenda Hyde

Soft, diffused light falls through a roofless stone nave, illuminating patches of ground fog that pool in the hollows of the floor. Tall, spiny cactus plants have taken root among the crumbling limestone blocks, their green forms contrasting against the weathered grey masonry. The early afternoon sun casts gentle shadows across the uneven terrain, highlighting the texture of dried moss and the rough surfaces of ancient arches. Layers of stone walls recede into the distance, framing a view of the dry, hilly landscape beyond. The air remains still, with moisture clinging to the low-lying stones and the sharp edges of the cactus pads catching the faint, cool light of the post-rain sky.
