Roofless Hammam Ruins in Mauritania Dry Season

by Edward Schroeder

Bright open daylight illuminates the interior of a roofless hammam where rain falls steadily against the dry season backdrop. Crumbling plaster walls reveal layers of ochre and faded white, their surfaces pitted by erosion. Broken arches frame the sky, while water pools in the hollowed stone floor, reflecting the gray rain clouds above. Balconies from an adjacent seaside resort structure hang precariously over the courtyard, their concrete slabs cracked and tilting downward. The rain creates dark streaks on the vertical masonry, showing the texture of decay. Small stones scatter across the wet ground, caught between the remnants of ancient benches. at the edge shows a single raindrop sliding down a jagged pillar edge before vanishing into the shallow pool below.
