Silhouetted Terraced Ruins in Late Afternoon Light in through a courtyard reclaimed by grasses near Raqqa

Silhouetted Terraced Ruins in Late Afternoon Light

by Preston Daniel

Clear dry mountain light defines the edge of a crumbling terraced row near Raqqa, casting the structure into a deep, uniform silhouette. Boarded windows appear as dark rectangular voids against the fading sky, their surfaces obscured by the heavy shadow. Tall, dry grasses rise unevenly across the foreground courtyard, their tips catching the last glow of the day. The texture of the masonry is coarse and eroded, showing layers of decay where vegetation has taken root. A patch of green grass grows directly from a fissure in the lower wall, its vibrant color stark against the dark, shadowed stone. Damp air settles among the rough stone blocks, visible as a slight haze clinging to the base of the ruins. A faint reflection of the sky rests on the wet surface of a fallen brick.
