Fern-Lined Hill Fort Entrance Surreal Horizon in through a courtyard reclaimed by grasses in Henan

Fern-Lined Hill Fort Entrance Surreal Horizon

by Andrea Morris

Wet fern fronds drape over the crumbling stone lintel of an ancient hill fort entrance in Henan, their dark green surfaces glistening under the late summer evening sun. A low layer of clouds hangs heavy near the horizon, casting a soft, honeyed glow that wraps around the courtyard reclaimed by tall, swaying grasses. The stone archway frames a view where a corridor extends visibly farther than the physical building that contains it, stretching into the distance as a seamless, impossible extension of the earth. The light catches the texture of the mossy rocks and the dew on the leaves, creating a sharp contrast between the organic decay and the impossible geometry of the path. at the edge is the way the horizon line aligns perfectly with the vanishing point of the endless stone corridor.
