Dutch Winter Fireflies Among Sunflowers at Twilight in under the clearest stretch of sky in Netherlands

Dutch Winter Fireflies Among Sunflowers at Twilight

by Cindy Medrano

Pale twilight washes the horizon where a distant Dutch town glows in soft amber bands. Tall, brittle sunflower stalks stand rigid in the foreground, their heads bowed under the weight of frost. The plants form dark, jagged silhouettes against the fading blue sky. Tiny points of greenish-yellow light flicker low among the dried seed heads, marking the emergence of fireflies. The air appears crisp and still, preserving the sharp edges of the frozen stems. A faint, cold wind seems to hold the dry chaff in place. The scene ends with a cluster of glowing insects hovering just above a frost-crusted seed head, their light reflecting briefly on the waxy surface of a withered petal.
