Milky Way Over Iraqi Sunflower Field at Night
by Howard Brady
A band of cold starlight slices across the dark sky above a dense field of sunflowers in late spring Iraq. The Milky Way glows with intense clarity, its core a thick ribbon of dust and light stretching diagonally from the upper left. Below, the sunflower heads are heavy and dark, their petals folded inward against the deep shadow. Impossible vertical growth transforms the scene: moss and grass cling to every upright surface, spreading sideways as if gravity has shifted. These green textures cover the stems and leaves in thick, impossible layers that defy natural orientation. A low haze lingers near the horizon, softening the distant dark earth. The rim light from the stars catches the edges of the moss, creating a sharp, glowing border against the night. at the edge is a single sunflower head tilted slightly, its dark center reflecting the starlight above.
