Fig Roots Split Ruined Tucson Greenhouse Nave

by Stephanie Richardson

Pale adobe walls frame the interior of a roofless greenhouse nave where late afternoon sun floods the space with broad, diffused light. Thick fig roots burst through the cracked floor, splitting the structure into jagged sections before vanishing into the dense ivy climbing the iron ribs. Condensation beads on the remaining shards of glass clinging to the metal frame, catching the late autumn glow. The iron skeleton, now draped in greenery, disappears upward into the open sky. Water stains mark the lower walls, showing years of rain exposure. One shard of glass reflects the bright sky against the rough, textured earth.
