Dragonfly Eye Close-Up Mauritania Monsoon
by Cheryl McGee
Water droplets rest on the iridescent surface of a dragonfly compound eye, magnifying the hexagonal facets in sharp relief. The insect rests low on a wet stalk along a muddy game trail in Mauritania, its wings folded tightly against a backdrop of blurred green vegetation. Bright midmorning light pierces through the monsoon drizzle, creating a high-contrast sheen on the chitinous exoskeleton. Tiny rivulets of rain slide down the curved lens, distorting the view of the surrounding grasses. The ground beneath is dark and saturated with moisture, reflecting the overcast sky. One droplet hangs precariously on the edge of the wing vein, refracting the pale morning sun into a spectrum of greens and blues. The texture of the wet earth contrasts with the smooth, glass-like hardness of the eye.
