Dragonfly Compound Eye Facets Glowing in Winter Drizzle
by Faith Santos
Golden afternoon light strikes the iridescent head of a dragonfly perched near a Kansas tidal inlet. Hundreds of hexagonal facets cover the compound eye, each reflecting the gray, overcast sky and the fine mist of a light winter drizzle. The insect remains perfectly still, its dark body contrasting against the blurred green and brown marsh grasses behind it. Water droplets rest on the delicate wings and the rough texture of the head, catching the bright tropical-style sunlight that cuts through the winter clouds. The shallow depth of field isolates the intricate geometry of the eye, turning the surrounding wetland into a soft wash of muted earth tones. One droplet rolls slowly down the curve of a wing, revealing the sharp, dark edge of the insect's form.
