Damselfly on Reed in Polish Wetland Noon Light
by Abby Keith
Flat noon light washes the reed bed in Poland, turning the tall green stalks into vertical pillars under a heavy, overcast sky. Raindrops hang suspended in the air, blurring the background into a wash of wet greens and greys. A slender damselfly rests on the rough, fibrous surface of a single reed near the ground. Its iridescent blue wings fold tightly along its back, reflecting the dull grey light. The insect’s large compound eyes dominate its head, fixed in an alert stare. Water beads on the reed’s skin, trembling slightly despite the lack of wind. The perspective looks up from the muddy bank, showing the height of the vegetation against the low-hanging clouds. One drop slides down the reed stem, catching a faint highlight before vanishing into the shadow of the leaf below.
