Dragonfly Compound Eye in Evening Mist
by Brooks Hobbs
Vibrant emerald and metallic gold facets dominate the frame in an extreme close-up of a dragonfly's compound eye. Low-angle orange light from the setting sun strikes the hexagonal lenses, creating sharp, glowing highlights that contrast with deep, shadowed recesses between the ommatidia. A thick, pale mist rests on the air, softening the background into a diffuse wash of amber and grey tones while leaving the insect's texture crisp and defined. The dry season air hangs heavy, visible as a fine haze around the subject. Each individual lens reflects the honeyed sky, creating a mosaic of light and shadow that reveals the raw, geometric structure of the eye. The edge of a translucent wing tip blurs slightly in the foreground, at the base of the macro view in the natural environment.
