Dragonfly Eye Catching Blue Light in above a glacial stream in Chile

Dragonfly Eye Catching Blue Light

by Carter Hensley

Vibrant blue highlights fracture across the hexagonal mosaic of a dragonfly's compound eye. The insect rests just above a glacial stream in midsummer Chile, where thin fog softens the background. Dappled sunlight falls through overhead leaves, casting shifting patches of bright illumination and deep shadow across the insect's back. The facets of the eye reflect the sky and surrounding foliage with sharp geometric precision. Fine hairs line the edge of the head, catching the light against the blurred motion of the water below. One facet near the bottom edge mirrors a sharp line of azure sky.
