Dik-dik on Moon Ridge at Sunset in on a wind-scoured ridge near Port Elizabeth

Dik-dik on Moon Ridge at Sunset

by Roberto Savage

A tiny dik-dik crouches within low, wind-scoured scrub against a stark black sky. The ground beneath its hooves is gray, powdery regolith scattered with sharp, angular rocks that cast hard, shadowless edges under the harsh, direct sunlight. The animal's fur appears matted and wind-whipped, its large eyes reflecting the blinding white glare of the sun positioned low on the horizon. Sparse, gray-green scrub vegetation rests on the dusty surface, frozen in a moment of tension. The lighting creates a high-contrast environment where shadows are sharp lines rather than soft gradients. One tuft of dry grass bends violently to the left, defying the lack of atmosphere while the animal remains perfectly still.
