Dik-dik Hiding in Scrubland Near Reed Bed

by Paula Pennington

Soft gray light falls through a dry, late morning sky, settling on the frayed edges of a reed bed near Dongshan. A small dik-dik presses its slender body into dense, brownish scrub, its coat blending seamlessly with the dry, brittle grasses. Tiny droplets of a light drizzle rest on the stiff, yellow-green stalks of the reeds, catching the diffused illumination. The animal remains perfectly still, ears flattened against the wind, surrounded by the muted textures of the dry season. Water beads on the nearest leaf, rolling slowly toward a dark, damp patch of earth where the scrub meets the water's edge. The scene holds a fragile silence, broken only by the visible weight of the rain on the vegetation.
