Alert Bat-Eared Fox on Wind-Scoured Ridge

Wet, dark soil rests on the wind-scoured ridge where a bat-eared fox stands rigid in bright midmorning light. The soft, diffused glow after rain highlights the coarse texture of its tawny fur and the sharp, black-tipped ears that swivel toward the horizon. Behind the animal, a gnarled, leafless oak branch creates a natural frame, its gray bark glistening with moisture. Late autumn has stripped the surrounding grasses to brittle, golden stubble that lies flattened against the damp earth. The fox's eyes are fixed forward, conveying an untamed tension as raindrops cling to its whiskers. One droplet slides slowly down a tuft of dry grass near its front paw, catching the pale light.
