Winter Fawn Hiding in Mongolian Reed Grass in at the edge of a reed bed in Mongolia

Winter Fawn Hiding in Mongolian Reed Grass

by Anna Hobbs

Pale winter light falls through low-hanging gray clouds, casting a soft, diffuse glow over a field of frozen, tan reeds. A young deer fawn presses its body flat against the ground, its spotted coat blending seamlessly with the dry stalks. The animal remains perfectly still, its large dark eyes scanning the horizon while its ears twitch slightly. Sharp blades of frost-tipped grass rise around the fawn's head, partially obscuring its form. The texture of the coarse, brittle reeds contrasts with the soft, downy fur of the fawn's neck. In the immediate foreground, a single bent stalk of dried grass curves sharply, at the base of the composition in the harsh, silent stillness of the Mongolian steppe.
