Frost on Glass in Vermont Manor Greenhouse in beneath a broken stone arch in Vermont

Frost on Glass in Vermont Manor Greenhouse

by Reese Dixon

Bleak twilight washes the crumbling stone arch of a Vermont manor greenhouse, where jagged shards of ice rest on the few surviving glass panes. Rain lashes horizontally across the frame, whipping through the open roof where the iron framework has long since surrendered to rust. The ground inside is a churned mix of mud and broken slate, reflecting the dim gray sky above. Water pools in the low spots, mirroring the fractured roofline and the heavy, gray clouds that press down on the ruin. Frost patterns etch the remaining windows in sharp, white veins against the dark, wet stone. One pane hangs precariously by its lead, trembling in the wind.
