Winter Mist Ruins and Fennel Beside Norbulingka

by Carson Richardson

Thick white mist rests on the base of volcanic stone blocks, softening their rough edges into the damp winter ground. Low-angle light from the setting sun casts long, pale shadows across the uneven masonry, highlighting the coarse texture of the weathered rock. Clumps of wild fennel rise from the cracks between the stones, their feathery green fronds standing stark against the grey mist. Ivy drapes heavily over the adjacent masonry, its leaves dull and wet in the cold air. The ancient blocks sit silent, their surfaces worn smooth by time and erosion, while the fennel stalks lean slightly under the weight of the humid air. One frond rests on a jagged stone edge, its tip catching the faintest glow of the dying light.
