Bridge Pier Cutwater Splits Flood Brown Current in beneath a bridge span in the Gobi Desert

Bridge Pier Cutwater Splits Flood Brown Current

by Pamela Lowery

Copper-toned light washes over the Gobi Desert before dusk, illuminating a massive concrete bridge pier standing firm against the rising flood. The cutwater at the pier's base slices through churning, opaque brown water, sending white foam spraying upward in a violent arc. Low amber light reflects off the wet, smooth steel beams of the bridge span above, creating a stark contrast with the rough, eroded earth of the riverbank. Wind whips across the surface, distorting the water into sharp ripples and sending dust swirling near the base of the structure. The sheer scale of the concrete pillar dominates the wide panoramic view, anchoring the scene against the chaotic movement of the monsoon flood. A jagged line of white spray marks the exact point where the solid stone meets the rushing river.
