Stone Wood Counterweight Bridge Mist
by Ricky Melton
Copper-toned light from the setting sun silhouettes a heavy counterweight house suspended beneath a bridge span over a black tidal channel. Thick mist swallows the lower water, leaving only the dark, geometric forms of the infrastructure visible against the fading sky. The massive wooden counterweight hangs in mid-air, its grain pattern etched into solid rock as if the timber has slowly petrified. Sharp edges define the stone-wood hybrid against the soft, opaque fog. A rusted metal cable pulls taut from the stone structure, anchoring it to the unseen bridge deck above. The transition from fibrous wood to rough granite happens abruptly along the side of the weight, creating a jagged boundary where organic texture meets unyielding mineral. The black water below reflects nothing, appearing as a void beneath the suspended mass.
