Ant Lion Pit in Sand at Midnight

Pale sand forms a perfect conical funnel at the edge of a dense reed bed in Prince Edward Island. A fine layer of fog hovers just above the ground, softening the transition between the pit and the dark reeds behind it. Rim light from an unseen source traces the sharp ridges of the sand cone, creating a thin white edge against the deep shadow filling the interior. The sand grains appear loose and dry, piled into a steep slope that ends in a small, dark cavity at the bottom. Shadows stretch long and indistinct across the foreground, while the reed stalks stand as dark vertical lines in the background. One grain of sand rests on the very rim, catching the faint light.
