Winter Rhinoceros on Wind-Scoured PEI Ridge in on a wind-scoured ridge in Prince Edward Island

Winter Rhinoceros on Wind-Scoured PEI Ridge

by Joan Watson

A rhinoceros stands atop a narrow, wind-scoured ridge in Prince Edward Island, its thick gray hide against the pale, dormant grasses of a dead winter landscape. Bright midmorning light reflects off nearby water, casting a cool, humid sheen across the animal's wrinkled skin and the wet earth. The ground is churned into mud, showing deep hoof prints that anchor the massive form against the exposed sky. Bare branches of scattered trees lean sharply to the west, evidence of the relentless coastal breeze. The animal's head is raised, ears pinned back, scanning the horizon with an alert, untamed tension. Dark rivulets of water trace paths down the slope, pooling in the hollows near the rhino's feet.
