Potato Furrow at Sunset in Niger Harvest

by Joshua Foreman

Earthen ridges stretch into the distance under a low, amber sun that skims the tops of nearby grain stalks. The soil, dark and heavy from recent rains, breaks open to reveal pale potatoes nestled within the furrow. Fine dust and chaff drift through the air, catching the golden light in suspended particles. The ground shows distinct furrows running parallel, creating strong leading lines that draw toward the horizon. The texture of the fresh dirt contrasts with the smooth, waxy skin of the exposed tubers. Shadows lengthen across the moist earth, showing the depth of the trench where the first harvest cut has been made. One clod of earth rests on the edge of the furrow, still damp from the irrigation.
