Silhouetted Ant Lion Pit in Copper Sand in at the edge of a reed bed in Lesotho

Silhouetted Ant Lion Pit in Copper Sand

by Amelia Ingram

Copper-toned light washes over a fine sand dune at the edge of a reed bed in Lesotho, highlighting the intricate geometry of an ant lion pit. The conical depression cuts sharply into the granular surface, its steep inner walls defined by loose grains that threaten to slide. Low ground fog pools in the surrounding hollows, softening the transition to the darker reeds standing tall in the background. The pit forms a perfect dark silhouette against the bright, fading sky, showing the fragility of the sandy structure. Tiny ridges of sand line the rim, catching the last glow of the day before dusk fully settles. One grain rests precariously on the lip of the cone, marking the boundary between the predator's trap and the open ground.
