Aardvark Emerging from Burrow in Maine Autumn Twilight

Cool blue light washes the edge of a reed bed where an aardvark pushes its snout from a dark burrow entrance. Flakes of snow drift through the fading twilight, settling on the animal's coarse gray fur and the dry, golden reeds that stand stiff against the cold. The creature's long, pointed ears twitch slightly as it pauses at the threshold, its dark eyes reflecting the dim sky. Behind it, the earth is loose and churned, against the smooth, white powder accumulating on the ground. One shadow stretches across the frozen soil, ending at the tip of a bent reed stalk.
