Vampire Squid Drifts Beside Volcanic Drop-Off

by Eduardo Kirkland

Indigo twilight water envelops a vampire squid as it extends its webbed arms in a delicate, translucent fan. The creature hovers near a dark volcanic rock formation that drops sharply into the abyss, its rough, black surface against the soft, milky haze of suspended plankton. Dim rim light traces the edges of the squid's mantle and tentacles, highlighting the fine, gelatinous texture of its skin against the deep shadow. Tiny specks of bioluminescence dot the water column, fading into the murky distance. The shallow depth of field keeps the squid's dark eyes and webbing in sharp focus while the volcanic drop-off blurs softly behind. A faint, glowing particle drifts past the creature's trailing tentacle tip.
