Bioluminescent Jellyfish in Salvador Bay in beside a volcanic drop-off near Salvador

Bioluminescent Jellyfish in Salvador Bay

by Blake McGuire

Green underwater light falls through the wet season haze, illuminating translucent jellyfish drifting near a steep volcanic drop-off. Surface ripples fracture the sunlight into shifting patterns across the gelatinous bells and trailing tentacles. Tiny plankton particles float in the water column, softening the distant view of the dark rocky wall. The water remains clear enough to reveal the fine texture of the jellyfish skin and the subtle glow of their internal bioluminescence. Sunlight patches dance on the sandy bottom before fading into the deep shadow of the cliff face. One tentacle tip touches a floating bubble of air.
