Pharaoh Cuttlefish Rippling Colors on Volcanic Reef

by Micheal Ochoa

Soft green and yellow light falls through the water column, illuminating a pharaoh cuttlefish hovering just above a dark volcanic rock formation. The creature's skin pulses with rapid, horizontal bands of crimson and white that ripple across its mantle like a living signal. Fine particles of plankton drift in the water, creating a hazy veil that softens the background beyond the reef edge. The cuttlefish's textured skin contrasts with the rough, porous surface of the basalt overhang. From a low angle, the animal appears to float weightlessly against the muted blue-grey water. One band of bright orange flashes along the lower edge of the mantle, fading into the murky distance.
