Blanket Octopus Drifting Near Volcanic Drop Off

by Amanda Herring

Deep blue water envelops a blanket octopus trailing its vast, iridescent membrane against a dark volcanic rock face. The creature drifts horizontally as the sun sinks toward the horizon, casting a warm amber glow that wraps the upper water column. Tiny suspended particles glitter throughout the mid-water, catching the fading light like scattered diamonds. The rock surface appears rough and jagged, against the soft, flowing texture of the octopus skin. Layers of depth recede into the distance, where the water transitions from bright amber near the surface to deep indigo shadows. A faint shadow of the membrane falls across the volcanic stone below, anchoring the floating form in the cold winter current.
