Octopus Squeezing Between Cold Reef Rocks

by Isaiah Bartlett

Pale, mottled skin of an octopus presses tightly against rough, dark basalt boulders in a shallow tide pool. The creature's mantle curves to fit the narrow gap between stones, its texture shifting from smooth to granular as it navigates the crevice. Sunlight penetrates the exceptionally clear water, illuminating the scene with a crisp, cool brightness that highlights the wet sheen on the rocks. Fine, slow ripples distort the light on the surface above, creating a shimmering grid of white highlights that dance across the octopus's tentacles. The water remains still enough to reveal the intricate suction cups along the limbs gripping the stone. A small bubble rests on the corner of a rock, catching the late morning sun.
