Underwater River of Hydrogen Sulfide in Cave Near Auckland

by Isabella Love

Clear water reveals a dense, milky plume of hydrogen sulfide flowing like a river along the sandy bottom. The current moves slowly, creating gentle surface ripples that fracture the bright midmorning sunlight filtering down from above. Below the plume, vibrant green seagrass sways in the gentle motion, rooted in the sediment. The water is exceptionally transparent, allowing visibility of the cave walls rising steeply on either side. Light rays cut through the fluid, illuminating suspended particles within the sulfur cloud. The scene presents a stark contrast between the white, opaque flow and the deep blue-green of the surrounding ocean. At the edge of the frame, a single blade of seagrass bends under the weight of the water.
