Winter Hydrogen Sulfide River Cave Close-up

by Edith Johns

Cloudy, pale green water fills a narrow cave passage, flowing over smooth, dark basalt stones. Fine white plankton haze diffuses the late afternoon sunlight filtering from a distant opening, softening the background into a muted gray. The water surface remains glassy, reflecting the rough texture of the cave walls without ripple. Small bubbles cling to submerged rocks, their surfaces shimmering with a faint iridescence. The water moves slowly, carrying a thick, milky opacity that obscures the riverbed beyond a few inches. Cold winter light enters at a low angle, illuminating the suspended particles and casting deep shadows into the crevices of the stone floor. The edge of a jagged rock juts into the foreground, its wet surface glistening against the stillness of the flow.
