Sea Apple Filter Feeding on Tropical Reef in beneath a reef ledge in tropical shallows near Cairns

Sea Apple Filter Feeding on Tropical Reef

by Cesar Hamilton

Sunlight penetrates the exceptionally clear tropical shallows near Cairns, illuminating a sea apple anchored beneath a rocky reef ledge. The translucent, pale body of the creature glows softly against the darker stone overhead. Vibrant orange and purple tentacles extend outward in a slow, rhythmic dance, capturing suspended particles from the water column. Tiny air bubbles rest on the rough texture of the surrounding coral formations. The water remains still except for faint, slow-moving ripples on the surface above, casting shifting patterns of light across the sandy bottom. Fine grains of sand settle gently near the base of the reef wall, while the creature's delicate appendages remain perfectly suspended in the midday clarity.
