Swallows Nesting in Roofless Belgian Hammam Ruin

by Angie Cummings

Bright midmorning light floods the interior of a roofless stone structure in Belgium, illuminating rows of mud nests clinging to high, weathered rafters. Swallows dart in and out of dark openings, their small bodies casting fleeting shadows against rough, textured brickwork. The space stretches vast and hollow, with layers of depth receding from the foreground into the distant, open sky. Late summer light creates sharp contrasts between warm, dusty tones of ancient walls and the cool blue of the perfectly clear sky above. One nest, packed with twigs and dried grass, hangs precariously near a crumbling archway, its owner pausing briefly before taking flight. A fragment of broken tile rests on the dusty floor beneath the shadow of a pillar.
