Rain Damp Stains on Hammam Walls in inside a roofless hammam in the Rhine Valley

Rain Damp Stains on Hammam Walls

by Santiago Nicholson

Soft gray afternoon light falls through the open, roofless space of an abandoned hammam in the Rhine Valley. Steady rain falls, turning the stone floor into a slick, dark mirror that reflects the pale sky. Damp, brownish stains climb the curved walls in irregular patches, marking where water has seeped through the crumbling masonry. Beside a row of rusted, gray filing cabinets standing in a shallow puddle, the air hangs heavy with moisture. The low angle emphasizes the height of the arches and the texture of wet stone against the smooth, cold metal of the cabinets. One drip falls from a broken tile edge into a puddle near the base of a cabinet leg.
