Swallows Nest in Vine Choked Stable Near Irbid

by Daisy Todd

Vines drape heavily over crumbling stone walls of an abandoned stable corridor near Irbid. Raindrops hang suspended in bright morning light, catching the sun as a brief shower passes overhead. Mud splatters the lower archways where swallows have built their nests. The rafters hold clusters of nests woven from straw and mud, occupied by small birds darting between beams. Green leaves contrast with weathered grey stone, while puddles reflect the pale sky. Water drips from a broken tile, falling into a shallow pool that mirrors the dark wooden beams above. A wet stone ledge holds a single discarded clay shard near the water's edge.
