Ruined Sugar Mill Amidst Tall Grass in Antsirabe
by Craig Zavala
Bright midday light floods the interior of a packing hall where stainless steel conveyors run parallel across a concrete floor. A roofless colonial sugar mill ruin stands against the far wall, its crumbling stone and missing timber framing exposed to the sky. Tall cane grass grows thick and green through gaps in the floorboards and around the base of the machinery, reaching waist height in places. A light drizzle falls from the open roof, creating small ripples on the metallic surfaces of the conveyors and darkening the stone. The contrast between the sleek, silver industrial equipment and the encroaching wild vegetation creates a textured, gritty scene. Water droplets rest on the steel rails, reflecting the gray sky above. The grass blades sway slightly where the wind pushes through the open structure, their tips glistening with rain.
