Silhouetted Mine Office Maps in Guyana Ruin
by Tom Gates
Honeyed evening light floods the roofless nave, casting the interior of an abandoned mine office into stark silhouette against a sky heavy with dramatic, rain-swollen clouds. Plywood walls weathered by the Guyanese rainy season stand exposed to the elements, their surfaces rough and peeling. Several large, faded maps remain tacked to the wood, their edges curling slightly in the damp air, creating a ghostly pattern against the dark interior void. The low angle emphasizes the height of the remaining structure, making the roofless opening feel like a vast mouth swallowing the sky. Deep shadows obscure the floor, while the light catches the texture of the rotting timber and the crisp, dark outlines of the paper maps, highlighting the resilient decay of the site.
