Rusted Waterwheel in Zapopan Paper Mill Ruins

by Rosalie Bradford

Cool blue twilight washes the crumbling remains of an abandoned paper mill in Zapopan. A massive iron waterwheel stands seized by thick, flaking rust, its spokes dark against the fading sky. Tumbled stone columns lie scattered across the wet ground, half-swallowed by tall, sharp nettles that sway in the damp monsoon air. Light fog drifts low, softening the edges of the stone and blurring the distance where the first electric lights of the city begin to glow. The wet earth reflects the blue sky, while the rusted metal absorbs the dimming light. In the background, the faint orange haze of urban illumination contrasts with the deep shadows of the overgrown ruin. One rusted bolt on the wheel head catches the last faint gleam of the sky.
