Andean Ruins with Milky Way in Daylight in along a vine-choked corridor in the Andes

Andean Ruins with Milky Way in Daylight

by Elaine Ramsey

Vines choke the crumbling concrete walls of a decaying housing block, their green tendrils weaving through broken windows and rusted laundry lines strung between balconies. The sky above is a clear, bright blue, yet a luminous band of the Milky Way arches distinctly across it, defying the morning light. Raindrops glisten on the wet stone surfaces, evidence of a passing sun shower in the rainy season. Layers of the structure recede into the distance, creating deep shadows where the first rays of sunrise touch the upper edges of the decay. The impossible stars remain sharp and white against the daylight, against the damp, textured masonry below. A wet clothesline sags slightly, its fabric heavy with moisture.
