Wet Stone Ghats Reflecting Sky After Rain in at a shrine entrance in India

Wet Stone Ghats Reflecting Sky After Rain

by Theresa Emerson

Smooth, grey stone steps rise steeply from the foreground, their surfaces slick with recent monsoon water. The wet slabs act as mirrors, capturing sharp, inverted reflections of the pale blue sky and faint white clouds above. Morning light falls through a thin layer of dry-season fog, softening the edges of the carved stairway and casting a cool, diffused glow across the masonry. Along the upper risers, small pools of water gather in the carved grooves, shimmering with highlights from the overhead light. The texture of the stone shifts from matte grey to deep, dark charcoal where the water settles. At the very bottom edge, a single droplet rests on the corner of the lowest step, ready to fall.
