Midnight Ruin Stone Well Manama Cloisters

by Lori Johnston

Rain falls in fine, vertical threads across the overgrown courtyard of a forsaken hamlet near Manama. A weathered stone well stands at the center, its rim slick with moisture and darkened by decades of neglect. Collapsed cloister arches frame the space, their broken masonry covered in creeping vines and tangled weeds that push through the cracks. Deep shadows swallow the interior of the ruins, while a faint rim light traces the jagged edges of the fallen stones and the tops of the vegetation. The air appears heavy with the drizzle, visible as a shimmering haze in the dim light. Moss rests on the damp, uneven ground where the path once led, marking the slow reclamation of the site by nature. The texture of the wet stone contrasts sharply with the soft, dark silhouettes of the encroaching plants.
