Misty Ruins of Stone Amphitheater at Dusk in among collapsed cloisters in Mexico

Misty Ruins of Stone Amphitheater at Dusk

by Connie Valenzuela

Thick gray mist rests on the weathered limestone blocks of a crumbling stone amphitheater, softening the sharp edges of the ancient seating tiers. Late autumn light casts long, cool shadows across the collapsed cloisters that surround the central arena. Vines with turning leaves drape over fractured archways, their muted greens and rusts against the pale, eroded stone. The ground is scattered with fallen masonry and patches of dry, brown grass that sway slightly in the damp air. As the sun dips below the horizon, the sky fades to a deep indigo, leaving the ruins in a dim, blue-gray twilight. One fallen pillar lies horizontally across the foreground, its broken end resting in a puddle of reflected mist.
