Monsoon Ruins: Silhouetted Lock Gates at Sunset in among collapsed cloisters in India

Monsoon Ruins: Silhouetted Lock Gates at Sunset

by William Walsh

The sky burns with deep orange and violet hues as the sun dips below the horizon, casting long shadows across the flooded courtyard. A crumbling river lock stands as a dark silhouette against the bright, low light, its timber gates rotted away to the waterline. Jagged arches of collapsed cloisters frame the structure on either side, their stone surfaces pockmarked by decades of monsoon rain. Low-hanging clouds press down on the scene, their gray undersides reflecting the fading warmth of the day. The water is still and dark, mirroring the broken masonry and the skeletal remains of the wooden gates. One piece of driftwood rests against the wet stone base of the nearest pillar, marking the high tide line of the recent storm.
