Rhinoceros in Autumn Mud Spokane

by Norman McIntyre

Thick, dark mud coats the massive, gray hide of a rhinoceros standing in a shallow pool. Late afternoon light strikes the wet skin with harsh, coastal glare, creating bright white highlights on the shoulder and head while casting deep shadows under the jaw. Low-hanging clouds hover above, diffusing the sky into a pale, heavy sheet. The surrounding ground is covered in dry, rust-colored autumn grasses that contrast with the dark, viscous mud clinging to the animal's legs. From behind, the thick tail hangs still, ending in a coarse tuft that rests against the thigh. One droplet of mud drips from the lower jaw, falling onto the muddy bank below.
