Indian Rhinoceros in Wet Season Marsh in near Santo Domingo

Indian Rhinoceros in Wet Season Marsh

by Ainsley Barajas

Thick layers of green foliage create a natural frame around a massive Indian rhinoceros standing in shallow marsh water. The flat noon sun falls through overhead leaves, casting sharp, dappled shadows across the animal's folded, gray skin and the muddy surface below. Fine droplets of sea spray hang suspended in the air, catching the light near the rhino's head and blurring the distant reeds. The creature's small ear twitches slightly while its dark eye scans the surroundings with intense focus. Heavy, wet mud rests on the lower legs, and the texture of the rhino's armor-like hide contrasts with the soft, swaying grasses surrounding the pool. One ripple distorts the reflection of a nearby leaf against the dark water.
