Indian Rhino in Alaskan Marsh at Dawn

by Megan Greer

A massive Indian rhinoceros stands knee-deep in the marsh, its thick, armor-like gray skin folded into heavy ridges. The creature is largely enveloped in deep shadow, yet a sharp rim of cool light traces the curve of its back and the edge of its single horn. Rain falls softly across the water, creating a network of small, concentric ripples that distort the reflection of the rhino's flank. Tall, wet grasses bow under the weight of the brief arctic summer shower, their green tips blurred by the moisture. The ground is a dark, spongy mix of mud and peat, absorbing the light. A final droplet slides from the tip of a reed, falling straight into the dark water below.
