Rainbow Striped Ridges Silhouetted Against Thunderheads in over a horizon of stacked thunderheads near Rufisque

Rainbow Striped Ridges Silhouetted Against Thunderheads

by Jackson Parrish

Vivid horizontal bands of red, ochre, and pale blue mineral layers define the curved ridges of the Zhangye Danxia landform. These colorful geological stripes stretch across the frame, appearing as a solid, dark silhouette against the overwhelming brightness of a tropical midday sun. Behind the landform, a massive wall of stacked thunderheads rises from the horizon near Rufisque, their flat bases and turbulent tops rendered in deep charcoal and grey. The harsh, direct light flattens the texture of the distant clouds while sharpening the jagged outline of the mineral strata. The dry season air creates a stark contrast between the warm, earthy tones of the rock and the cool, heavy gray of the approaching storm. The lowest ridge edge cuts a sharp, clean line against the brightest patch of the sky.
